Saving Those Who Save Us
B.A.B.C.Y.S. – Be A Buffalo; Charge Your Storm
My name is Donald Babineaux, and I served in law enforcement for over two decades. Like so many first responders, I witnessed the very worst of humanity—homicides, suicides, sexual assaults, and child exploitation cases. I specialized in Internet Crimes Against Children, where the work was rewarding but deeply scarring. The sleepless nights, flashbacks, and unrelenting stress changed me in ways I refused to admit.
In 2024, my personal life fell apart. My marriage ended, and I kept telling myself, “I’m fine.” But I wasn’t. On May 19, 2024, I nearly ended my life. I thought about where and how, trying to protect my loved ones and coworkers from being the ones to find me. By God’s grace, I heard a voice telling me not to do it—and I listened.
The next day, I sought help at a mental health facility for first responders. I spent 45 days there, receiving care that saved my life. For the first time, I realized I wasn’t alone. I met other law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, correctional officers, and military service members—all of whom had been carrying the same invisible burden.
But here’s the problem: not everyone gets this chance. According to ABC News, 184 law enforcement officers die by suicide every year. When you add firefighters, paramedics, and corrections officers, that number is even higher. Suicide claims more first responders’ lives than line-of-duty deaths. And too often, financial barriers keep them from accessing the treatment they desperately need.
That’s why I founded B.A.B.C.Y.S. (Be A Buffalo; Charge Your Storm).
Just as buffalo face storms head-on instead of running away, we aim to help first responders face their mental health struggles with courage and support. Our mission is to provide financial assistance to first responders nationwide so they can access specialized treatment programs and cover basic needs during recovery.
Our Goal
We are raising $100,000 annually to support first responders in crisis, including providing grants to cover treatment not paid by insurance, plus basic necessities (food, clothing, grooming) for first responders entering inpatient programs. Every dollar donated goes directly toward saving lives.
Why This Matters
When citizens call 911, it’s often on their worst day. First responders show up, no matter the risk, no matter the cost. But when it’s their worst day—who do they call? Too often, the answer is no one. We want to change that.
B.A.B.C.Y.S. will be that safe place. That support system. That lifeline.
How You Can Help
Donate today – Any amount helps a first responder access life-saving care.
Share our story – Spread the word on social media, with family, and friends.
Be part of the storm – Stand with first responders the way they stand with us every day.
I created B.A.B.C.Y.S. because I know firsthand what it’s like to be on the edge, convinced there’s no way out. But there is a way forward. Together, we can make sure that no first responder has to fight that battle alone. Please donate and share. One life lost is one too many. Your support can prevent a suicide. Your support can save a life.
